TAKING CARE OF YOUR MIND: A GUIDE TO PSYCHOLOGICAL FIRST AID

Life can sometimes throw us for a loop, and it’s essential to have some first aid tools in your emotional backpack. What did you do the last time you got a cold, take medicine for sure but do you remember how you healed your mind when you went through an emotionally and mentally challenging time? Perhaps you did not. This can have a lasting negative impact on your mental health. This blog explores some easy ways to take care of your mind.

Your Feelings Matter

First things first, it’s okay to feel strongly about things. Emotions come and go. So, don’t be too hard on yourself if you don’t “feel” or “react” to a situation in a certain manner.

Don’t be afraid to reach out

If you’re going through a tough time, reach out to someone you are comfortable with. A friend, family member, or therapist can be your listening ear.

Be kind to yourself

Imagine you’re talking to someone you love a lot and who’s going through hardships in life. Would you be as harsh on them as you are on yourself sometimes? Probably not. Don’t forget to treat yourself with kindness. You are doing the best you can and you deserve happiness.

Be in the Moment

Staying in the present can be one of the most helpful things. Stay present, focus on the now, and tackle one thing at a time. Try to avoid worries about the future or the burden of tomorrow, this can open up a lot more space in your mind.

Breathing Exercises

So relax, take a deep breath and feel the calmness within you. Deep breaths can calm your mind and help you regain control when you feel anxious or scared. Think of breathing as a rerouting tool. Whenever you feel that you are rushing nowhere or it’s too chaotic, take a moment and take deep breaths, renavigate your mind to a more balanced place.

Throw the negativity out

Avoid stuffing your mind with too much negativity. Doing this measure can be unique to you – from limiting exposure to social media to even limiting your friends or co-workers.

Taking care of your mind isn’t about being perfect; it’s about being yourself. Embrace your mental well-being. Be kind to yourself, reach out when needed, and may your mental self shine bright.
